Al Hirschfeld is, among other things, yet more evidence that Missouri is a progenitor of many beautiful things. I must admit that when I made my list of artists to showcase, I hesitated to insert Mr Hirschfeld's name. The reason? I am intimidated as hell by the mountainous craftsmanship of this, one of America's finest gifts to the world. I decided to tackle him early on so that the dread would go away. Hirschfeld's drawings are economical, lyrical, perfect. I can think of no other draftsmen who have surpassed him. To look at his work is to breathe in the first day of summer, to admire a beautiful someone in a cafe who is way out of your league but condescends to smile at you, the feel of cool fresh sheets on a warm night. If you are not familiar with Mr Hirschfeld's oeuvre, please please please search him out (and the next time you're in the Loop, find his star and say "Hi," from me).
